with odds like that - 85 million - at least it means there will in all probability be many people who won't have to dig deep and examine their priorites, apart from the occasional flutter, come tomorrow.

There were no first division winners in Oz Lotto's $59 million draw last Tuesday night so the prize pool has been raised to a staggering $90 million this week. "Gobsmacked" Tattersall's chiefs have guaranteed the massive payout on the back of unprecedented ticket sales.

"The lotto frenzy we have already experienced over the past week is expected to reach epic proportions in the lead-up to next Tuesday night's draw," Tatt's publicity manager Karen Anning said. "We were expecting the game to jackpot to $60 million next week if there were no first division winners but, due to the unprecedented level of interest in last night's draw, the decision has been made to offer a minimum guaranteed jackpot level of $90 million," she said.

One in five Australian adults are believed to have had a ticket in Tuesday's draw. Long queues formed at Lotto agencies from early in the day until doors closed. The draw attracted 79 million entries, with each entry having a one in 45 million chance of winning. The queues are bound to get bigger next Tuesday for the chance to win a tax-free ticket to a fortune.

"This is unknown territory," Ms Anning said. "We've never been at this level before. It's the first time in Australian lotto history that we've been anywhere near $90 million."

The huge pool comes after nine weeks in which the first division prize failed to go off. Twelve weeks is the longest run without a winner. One in three Australians are expected to buy tickets for next week's mammoth Lotto. Ms Anning said Tattersall's would print extra tape to ensure lottery agents didn't run out of tickets.

"It has taken over public imagination. For as long as there are no first division winners, it is possible to dream that it could be you."

If next Tuesday's first division prize doesn't go off, lottery officials will decide on the amount of winnings on offer.

"They make that decision based on the sales that we receive this week," she said. "The first division prize pool is pretty much an accumulation of the prize pool . . . plus what we expect the level of interest is for the next draw."

With the $50m draw the second division prizes (6 numbers and a supp) were only around $26k each with 32 winners.

I personally think it would have been nicer to have capped the first prize at $60m and added the rest to the lesser prizes.

i will be in it with a systems 7 [cheapest entry]----doesn't matter how much money you spend, you can't materially affect the odds in your favour.

but you gotta be in it to win it.

our newsagent opened at 6.30am and there was a queue at 7.15am when I went to pre-purchase bus tickets (yep, prices go up tomorrow 01 Jul). So I missed out in participating

and I thought Oz lotto was run by NSW govt - not TTS - but in the process of being flogged off.

benthonic,

you can buy an Ozlotto ticket for tonight until late this afternoon - I am not sure what time it closes in NSW, but here in WA it is 6pm local time.

Here in WA Lotto appears to be more or less government run, with proceeds from tickets sold here benefiting charities and community groups in WA. We pay $13.10 for the 12 game ticket.

I do not think that having all the numbers on the ticket will actually increase your chance of winning, but at least you feel better if you have at least some of the winning numbers on the ticket rather than none of them.

I am going to generate a random set of numbers with cungevoi's program and get a ticket.

Cheers

The publicly listed TATTS Group TTS controls the purse strings for Australia's most lucrative LOTTO. pokie and wagering markets, and it's shareholders are laughing all the way to the bank.
For every $1.10 spent on LOTTO tickets, 9 cents goes directly to TATTS, 10 cents to the agents, 31 cents to the State Government and 60 cents is put back into the prize pool.

LOTTO is the only form of gambling where the chances of winning are only very slightly improved by buying a ticket.
Cheers.

As long as it is treated as fun. I mean 7 numbers from 45? Combinations with no repetition is 45,379,620. You have a better chance of having your bottom struck by lightning (1.6m to 1) according to the data published by the Australian Institute of Gambling Research.

Bloke I know informs me that there is no system which will predict or select the winning numbers. As he has a Dr before his name and teaches mathematics at the Uni of New South Wales I tend to believe him.

And we have no ticket in the darn thing cause I though the wife would buy one and she thought I would.

Forget all that pseudo-serious market stuff of three letter acronyms, TLAs, stock codes, BHP and financial guff EPS, etc.

We are all just here for da loot !

How did all the dreamers go tonight with their PWR ball ?

$80M - not to be sneezed at, and likely we will see such inducements again in the coming years.

Number tippers give three tit bits

1. Spread and cover all the numbers.

Wrong. This is like those people at the roulette table. Covering almost all the numbers with their colour chips. But for maybe one or two numbers. That way, more often than not they convince themselves they are "winning" (or not losing soo much). It's okay if you have a sugar daddy buying your staking chips. However 40 chips spent to win 36 is not a winning formula - no matter how you Monte Carlo it.

2. Similarly, they say in power ball, where all the numbered balls are silvery grey instead of red or black, they say to spread your selections between odd and even numbers. Tonights numbers for 80 million beer tickets were

13 17 15 21 45 and 37

Hmm, thats odd, they are all odd. Even so much for that theory. LOL.

3. 3rdly, they say choose a couple of high numbers - above 31. I call this the uber-greedy tip. It is based on the fact that a lot of people habitually believe there is something lucky about little Suzy's birth date. So very many people "play" their spouse, kids and loved one's birth dates that it is odds on when the numbers 1 to 31 do come up you will be sharing your $80M with 50 other Australian families. Could be worse things to share.

There are more tips, but seriously; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. have the mathematically identical probability to any pseudo random set of lucky numbers you can pick.

That said - good luck to all of you.

Last week when it was $50m for the powerball lotto I was only a couple of digits out. I had four numbers so won $47. Of the numbers I did not have, one was 17 and I had 27 and the Powerball was 43 and I had 23.

Since the first digit could only be 0 to 3 for the first one and 0 to 4 for the second I calculate I was within a 1 in 20 chance of winning it.

Grrr !

Cheers
