Time to GO GOLD

Postby robert garden » Sun Jul 22, 2007 6:38 pm

As the boy said ...."the time has come "

I think we may all need to have a gold stock or two in our portfolios for the coming 6 - 12 months ....

With that said ..I am investigating and running my eyes over :
In alphabetic order ......AAR....11 cents.....CTO.....50.5 cents...LGL...$3.17...PRU...$1.34...RMS..$1.90...probably should add OXR..

i don't get gold, own no gold stocks, can't get excited.
got some mates do prospecting, and i've handled some significant nuggets, but still not bitten.
[lot of dirt mixed with it]
i have heard some interesting anecdotes about the outperformance of gold coins versus gold stocks though--if you get the right ones......

Hi

Newmont (NEM) looks like a a double header. New CEO is quickly sorting out its operational problems and it is fully exposed to the gold price with the closing out of its hedging. Price looks like it has established an up trend. So is a recovery stock (was $8 12 months ago and now $5) and a gold price stock. It is one of the worlds largest producers.

I hold.
Cheers

In terms of a gold junior to watch I would suggest ALD is one that is worth purchasing on weakness. Has a 17m oz resource in the Tamar Islands, which forms part of the same archapeligo as Lihir - essentially it is Lihir's mini-me. On the verge of transitioning from an explorer to producer with first pour scheduled for Oct this year. Unfortunately it has run very strongly since mid Aug, up from 38c to 70c yesterday.

If anyone is interested, I did a rather simple spreadsheet analysis a while back on it which I've tried to attach here - hopefully it will upload. The workings have been heavily plagerised from other spreadsheet models I have seen around the place, so credit should go to numerous other sources rather than me. It was done more as an exercise in seeing if I could try and model it, rather than as something that could be used to bet the house on, so please bear that in mind. I would be keen on hearing feed back on any flaws (of which I am sure that there are many) in it or things that I have missed - probably the biggest one is the assumption that excess cash earns interest at 5% rather than being paid out as dividends, but I wasn't really sure what to do.

Anyhow if for nothing else if you're a bit of a spreadsheet nerd it can be fun to have a play with the variables and run with various what if senarios.

Thanks for the one up on ALD - Disco Stu,

Looks like gold has rallyed hard and will pull back a bit over the next week(s). ALD could be a good buy on any pull backs , will do my own reasearch ....

DCF - is a good tool to use but too many external factors affect the model and I have yet to come across a DCF that has been accurate beyond 2 years.

Muhaha,
Have a look at Monarch. MON. First gold pour in Aug.
Michael Kiernan run company (driver of CSM).
No a recommendation but worth a look.
I took up a modest parcel and will let it run.
cheers

Interesting find Ian,

One thing though about gold companies with operations in australia is the high AUD and high AUD costs. Gold in terms of AUD has not done as well as Gold in terms of USD. My exposure to gold is with LGL, SGX , and DIO.

SGX is lookign expensive at present levels but it is a solid stock with foot hold to gold mining in China , A gold giant in the making IMHO.
Having said that MON is an interesting company and chart wise looks good, i will look into it further.
